NCLEX-RN Frequently Asked Questions
What does NCLEX-RN stand for?
NCLEX-RN stands for NCLEX-RN. It is administered by NCSBN.
Who administers the NCLEX-RN?
The NCLEX-RN (NCLEX-RN) is administered by NCSBN. For official information, visit the NCSBN website.
What is the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN)?
The NGN introduced in April 2023 adds new question types (extended drag-and-drop, enhanced hot spots, matrix questions) designed to measure clinical judgment. C3RT covers all NGN question formats.
How hard is the NCLEX-RN?
The NCLEX-RN is universally considered the most high-stakes nursing exam. Using Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) format since 2023, it features clinical judgment-focused questions including case studies and novel item types. First-attempt pass rates nationally run approximately 80–85% for US-educated candidates. International graduate pass rates are notably lower. The adaptive format means difficulty adjusts to your performance in real time.
What is the NCLEX-RN pass rate?
The NCSBN regularly publishes pass rate data. As of recent cycles, first-time US-educated candidate pass rates are approximately 83–86%, while repeat candidates and internationally educated nurses have lower rates. Pass rates vary significantly by nursing program quality — using a school's published NCLEX pass rate is a strong indicator of program effectiveness.
How does Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) work on NCLEX-RN?
The NCLEX-RN uses CAT with the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) format. The exam presents a minimum of 85 items and a maximum of 150, with the number of questions you receive determined by how well you perform — not how many you answer. The algorithm continuously estimates your ability level and ends the exam once it is 95% confident you are either above or below the passing standard. You cannot know how you did based on how many questions you received.
What education is required to sit for the NCLEX-RN?
Candidates must graduate from an accredited pre-licensure RN program — either an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN, typically 2–3 years) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN, typically 4 years). Graduates must apply for licensure through their state board of nursing and receive an ATT (Authorization to Test) from Pearson VUE before scheduling the exam.
How long should I study for the NCLEX-RN?
Most candidates study 4–12 weeks after graduation. A structured study plan using an NCLEX review course (e.g., UWorld, Kaplan, ATI) with daily practice questions and weekly performance analysis is the most effective approach. Focus on clinical judgment, priority/delegation questions, and the NGN item types (case studies, bowtie questions, extended drag-and-drop).
How does NCLEX-RN compare to NCLEX-PN?
The NCLEX-RN tests for RN-level clinical judgment and a broader, more complex scope of practice including assessment, complex patient management, and independent nursing interventions. The NCLEX-PN tests for LPN/LVN scope — which is more focused on assisting with care, reinforcing teaching, and working under RN or physician supervision. RNs have a significantly broader independent practice scope than LPNs.
What happens if I fail the NCLEX-RN?
Failing candidates must wait at least 45 days before retesting and reapply for candidacy through their state board. NCSBN provides a candidate performance report (CPR) that identifies areas of weakness by content category. There is no lifetime limit on attempts, but some states have additional requirements after multiple failures. Repeat candidates should enroll in a structured remediation program rather than simply retaking the exam.
Does NCLEX-RN expire or require renewal?
The NCLEX-RN is a licensure examination, not a certification — it results in an RN license, not a renewable credential. The license itself must be renewed periodically (typically every 2 years) through your state board of nursing, which requires a renewal fee and in most states a set number of continuing education hours. The passing score from NCLEX does not expire.
